Smoking Our Way to Fame: Benson & Hedges

In the immediate aftermath of the San Diego Wildfire Crisis of '07, my thoughts naturally turned to... cough... cough... smoking.

It appears that The Lost Boys of Penzance have added to the lore of Benson & Hedges cigarettes. From the Benson & Hedges entry in Wikipedia is this passage in the Trivia section:

The Lost Boys Of Penzance, a surf band from Encinitas, CA, have recorded "Disadvantages of You", which was the music used for the TV commercial "Oh the disadvantages of the new Benson and Hedges 100s"

I must admit that this is very cool...someone thought to add LBoP's recording of The Disadvantages of You to the lore of a famous brand of ciggies that date back to 1873. The Trivia section also noted these famous rock musos/B&H smokers: Noel and Liam Gallagher (Oasis) and Angus Young (AC-DC).

TVparty.com had this to say about that famous Benson & Hedges TV ad campaign of 1967:

Not surprisingly, manufacturers have always looked for new ways to modify their products and create new brands. A brilliant example would be Benson and Hedges 100s in 1967.

This was one of the most celebrated and effective ad campaigns of all time. Benson and Hedges actually built a brand name (and consumer demand) by making fun of their product, illustrating the distinct disadvantages of smoking a longer cigarette.

So there you have it: LBoP adds to the lore of Benson & Hedges and gets mentioned in the same breath as Oasis and AC-DC. OK, that last part might be a bit of a stretch.

LBoP actually does NOT endorse smoking due to the havoc it wreaks on the body. If one must choose between smoking and music, choose music. Always.

[Update 2010: Some anonymous Wikipedia Nazi deleted the LBoP mention of the "Disadvantages..." track from the Benson & Hedges wiki entry. "No verbiage for you!"]
